Start with the room area, add a waste allowance, then divide by how much one box covers.
Cuts, offcuts, and pattern matching mean you always buy more than the bare room size. A 10% waste allowance is typical for straight layouts; bump it to 12–15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, busy rooms, and tile. Boxes = area-with-waste ÷ coverage per box, always rounded up to a whole box.
Coverage per box varies by product — hardwood and laminate run about 20 ft², vinyl/LVP about 24, tile around 15 — so check your box label and adjust the field. Carpet is sold by the square yard (area ÷ 9) rather than by the box. Turn on underlayment to also get the number of rolls for your subfloor.
Multiply the room area by 1 plus your waste percentage, then divide by the coverage per box and round up. For example, 400 ft² with 10% waste is 440 ft²; at 24 ft² per box that's 19 boxes of LVP.
Add about 10% for standard straight-lay installations, and 12–15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, rooms with many cuts, and tile. Keeping a spare box or two also helps with future repairs.
Carpet is typically sold by the square yard, which is 9 square feet. Divide your area (including waste) by 9 to get square yards. This calculator switches to square yards automatically when you choose carpet.
Most floating floors (laminate, some LVP) need underlayment for cushioning, sound, and moisture protection; glue-down and many pad-attached products don't. Turn on the underlayment option to estimate rolls for your subfloor area.
Multiply length by width for rectangular rooms, and add the areas of each section for L-shaped or irregular rooms. Enter that total as the room area — the calculator adds waste on top.
